Mountain Cats TNR, Inc. is a small nonprofit whose mission is to lessen the suffering of community feral and stray cats in Jefferson County, WV through trapping, spay/neuter/return and when possible, adoption. It's a pretty monumental task as our all volunteer crew faces both economic and cultural challenges in educating our local audience about the need for spay/neuter while feral populations continue to soar. We exist solely on donations and small grants and are constantly hustling to pay for spay/neuter surgeries and the care of cats who because of age, illness or disability can't be returned to their colonies post surgery.
Tina Creller founded the organization in March of 2015 under Shannondale and Beyond Inc.ʼs nonprofit status. We run a small rescue in Shannondale, housed in what we call the Cat Shed, where cats who are sick, physically challenged, and too young or too old to safely be returned to their communities post spay/neuter find shelter. When space permits we also keep cats who prove to be good candidates for adoption, many likely having been pets at one time. In April of 2022, Mountain Cats TNR, Inc. left the auspices of Shannondale and Beyond and established it's own 501c3. Since that independence and with a new Board of Directors, made up of volunteers determined to make the organization as professional and successful as possible, we've been growing as has our reputation for changing the lives of local feral cats. Meanwhile the challenge presented by growing numbers of these cats living on our citiesʼ streets, rural farms and mountain communities is overwhelming. Through no fault of their own, these cats face a daily struggle to find food and shelter while their populations grow. Our organization is committed to the the practice of TNR as the only realistic and humane approach to addressing their suffering and we are the only local group for whom the practice of TNR is the primary focus. Our ongoing mission is highlighted by the phrase One Cat at a Time.
